Dracula Land Arena. A New Model for Sports and Entertainment Infrastructure
Dracula Land Arena is a large-scale sports and entertainment project developed as the core component of the DraculaLand masterplan, a 160-hectare private investment located near Bucharest. Designed by Răzvan Bârsan + Partners as architect and lead designer, the arena is conceived as part of an integrated urban system, not as a standalone object.
The project received the Jury Award at the World Architecture Community Awards, Cycle 52, in the Architecture, Designed, Sports Buildings category. The distinction highlights the clarity of the architectural concept, the functional logic, and the project’s capacity to support international-scale events.
The initial concept started as a theme park. During development, the direction shifted toward a year-round entertainment and sports infrastructure. This decision addressed a clear gap in the regional context: the lack of a high-capacity indoor arena in Romania capable of hosting international productions under controlled conditions.
The brief defined three major components. A main arena with over 22,500 seats, a digital arena with 1,000 seats dedicated to esports, and a system of retail and food and beverage spaces designed to extend the user experience. These elements operate as a coherent system, structured through precise relationships between volumes and circulation.
The built area reaches approximately 80,000 sqm. At this scale, spatial organization becomes critical. Public access, VIP zones, and production logistics are clearly separated and optimized. The arena supports multiple event scenarios, including concerts, sports competitions, ice events, festivals, esports tournaments, and hybrid formats.
The Grand Arena accommodates large-capacity events and allows flexible configurations of stage and seating. The Digital Arena introduces a complementary layer, tailored for competitive gaming and live digital broadcasting, with specific requirements for visibility, acoustics, and interaction.
The main architectural challenge was integration. The project required aligning different functional systems within a single coherent structure. Circulation, volume, and section were developed to reduce overlap and maintain clarity. The relationship between event spaces and commercial areas supports continuous use throughout the day, beyond scheduled events.
The development process included direct analysis of European arena models. The developer invested in research to understand operational and technical standards. Based on this input, the design team proposed multiple architectural concepts, evaluated through performance, adaptability, and clarity.
The project maintains a controlled approach to identity. Cultural references exist but do not generate a literal or thematic architecture. The design focuses on performance, orientation, and user experience, aligning with contemporary standards in sports architecture.
Dracula Land Arena proposes a relevant model for large-scale venues in emerging markets. It combines sports architecture, entertainment infrastructure, and urban integration into a single system designed for flexibility and long-term use.
Dracula Land Arena reflects the design approach of Răzvan Bârsan + Partners as architects and lead designers of the DraculaLand masterplan. The project demonstrates how sports architecture can operate as infrastructure, supporting large-scale events, esports, and hybrid formats within a coherent urban system. Located near Bucharest, the arena positions Romania within the European network of high-capacity indoor venues and sets a new benchmark for arena design, event infrastructure, and integrated entertainment developments.
